Market!

Sandy and Sue are off at market having the time of their lives!!

Aren't we all a little bit jealous? Yes, you can admit it...don't you wish you could have tucked yourself into their suitcases!?! ...well, maybe we can't bend that way anymore...but it would have been fun to go with them!

So some of you have asked what market is...

Market is a quilter's heaven! Close your eyes and picture what a quilter's heaven would look like...you would see beautiful fabrics, nifty notions, creative patterns, and just miles upon miles of booths filled with quilt paraphernalia! ...and that is just what market is!! Everything good in the quilt world comes together for an amazing quilting adventure...oh yeah, and LOTS of shopping!

Since we can't all go to market...cause you have to be a store owner or in the industry to attend...the wonderful people of Quilts, Inc also plan a HUGE quilt festival! The festival begins just as market is ending - so this is something to add to your bucket list!...and they do more than just one quilt festival per year so check your calendar, gather a few friends, and book a plane ticket or load up the RV!

You can join the International Quilt Fest on Facebook and check out their website to learn more about market and the festival in general!

As Sandy and Sue mentioned earlier they will be posting all kinds of fun updates over the weekend - when they get back we will do one big blog post with pictures and if we can, some sneak peaks!!

...and while they are away we will have some fun here at the shop for Halloween so also be ready for some quiltin' fun...and next week we start sharing lots of great Christmas gift ideas!

Here at Quilting by the Bay we realize that we are truly blessed. We spend hours upon hours fondling fabrics, piecing quilts, and sharing our love of quilting with all of you. Not everyone is as fortunate so we have joined Quilt Aid USA 2010

There are 6 shops in total participating. Each shop had the opportunity to team up with 2 designers - so there are 12 quilt blocks all together.

Below are the two blocks we are offering and also our finishing kit! The quilt finishes 100" x 100" and it just so special! Click HERE to visit our website with all of the Quilt Aid details!

Celtic Wave

I think we may be speechless when it comes to this quilt - it is so beautiful the picture does not do it justice!

Amazon Star Kit!!

Amazon Star Kit
Judy and Brad designed the Amazon Star for foundation paper piecing.

A collection of Bali Batiks designed by Hoffman California Fabrics were used to make the quilt shown on the box cover.

A sewing technique called foundation paper piecing is used to assemble the units required to make this quilt. A strip piecing technique designed for foundation paper is used to piece the Lone Star units. A template layout piecing technique that I teach for foundation paper piecing is used to piece all the border spikes, Mariner's Compass and circling spikes. Traditional piecing skills will be required to join the units after the foundation piecing is completed.

Quilt Size: 104" by 104"
Kit includes fabric for top and binding.
Pattern sold separately.

Adorable Scarecrow and "Quilted" Carved Pumpkins!

Need something to put in your foyer or on your buffet? This adorable Stick Scarecrow is just what you need to add some height to your Halloween and fall display!

Happy Hollow Stick Scarecrow finishes 32" tall so he is just right to stand behind a beautifully carved pumpkin or two! You make this scarecrow using an easy fusible grid technique. We have a fabric kit, the fusible grid, and the accessories available on our website. It is a perfect project for a Sunday afternoon - open your windows, enjoy the weather, and quilt away!

We also had a great fan photo emailed to us yesterday! Two of our quilting customers carved pumpkins to mimic a quilt block! They were so creative we had to share them you! (Note that there is a quilt on the table and hanging on the chair in the back - they are definitely quilters!)

How did hey do this? We had to ask because we bet you want to try this, too!

They simply drew a basic quilt block on the pumpkin using a sharpie. Then they cut off the top of the pumpkin and cleaned it out really well just as if they were carving a regular Jack-O-Lantern design. They said the only thing they did different was use a strong metal spoon - not their regular silverware or serving spoons - and thinned out the area inside where they were going to carve. Since the design is a little intricate it makes it easier to have a "thinner" pumpkin wall. They did use the carving kit tools that you can pick up at any Target or Walmart - it made it easier to carve the small circles they had in their design.

So now it is your turn to make a little scarecrow and "quilt" your pumpkin! How fun to pick your favorite quilt block and use it as your pumpkin design this year! This will certainly be a hit with all of your quilt friends!

If you decide to "quilt" a pumpkin please share your pictures with us on Facebook!

We hope you enjoy the Scarecrow and the pumpkin idea!

Spooky and Silly Halloween Quilts!

Spooks on Parade
Have a stash of Halloween fabric that you are just not sure of how to use? Or maybe you just want to make a Halloween quilt that is both spooky and silly!

...if you answered yes to either question then this is the quilt for you!

Spooks on Parade is an easy, fast, fat quarter friendly quilt pattern that finishes 56" x 68" making the perfect lap quilt. The pattern also includes instruction for a table runner - so a little "Halloween Treat!"

Want to have this quilt just as it is? No problem, we have kits made up for you, too!

We think what makes this quilt so fun - besides the spooky ghosts on it - is that you can pick so many different fabrics! There are so many great Halloween lines this year...like "Seen on Halloween" so you can really satisfy your "fabric tooth" and pick out some new fabrics and some fabrics from your stash and just make a quilt that takes very little time to complete but will make you smile everytime you see it!

Hot Cakes!

Yesterday on Facebook we asked what you all were working on...and you said Christmas Gifts!

So, since we have some adorable fabrics on sale right now we thought we would share a cute pattern that works with them - Hot Cakes!!

The Arabella line of fabric would be too cute for these pot holders. Here is how we see it working:

Picture this as the chocolate icing

This can be the orange slice on top of the cupcake (the pot holder hanging handle)

and this can be the base (or cake) of the cupcake (where you slide your hand in)!

This pattern is very easy to make, fat quarter friendly, and you can make a bunch of these and keep them ready as gifts during the holiday season. You could even use these as Thanksgiving hostess gift - that is if you somehow get lucky enough to no be the one slaving away all day in the kitchen!

Oh, and if you are doing a cookie exchange for the holidays - what a great little gift to include with your bags of cookies!

...and this would be a great project to share with your little ones or grandkids when they are over to visit!

Hope you like the ideas!
